*Special Note from Owner
Seattle...Seattle...Seattle. Sometimes I love it, sometimes not so much. I have a long history with this city. I attended Seattle Pacific University for 4 years where I did my undergraduate work and spent alot of time shuffling between Queen Anne and Downtown for work study jobs. I also delivered for various Domino's Pizza's. My parents lived in Ballard and I stayed with them some summers, but I lived for awhile in Capital Hill and later owned a home in Lakeridge. In terms of square miles, Seattle is a large city, but I like to think I'm intimately familiar with its streets.
The density of Seattle sometimes makes it tricky for carpet cleaners. We might be at a home in Wallingford with parking only available on the street. All our vans have truckmounted equipment, which means the hoses connect our van/truck to inside the home. So, what happens if all the spots on the street are taken? We also have to be careful we didn't just get a call from the 15th floor of an apartment building. 15 floors is a long way to run hoses.
Of course, I have employees now, so it's not just me driving around anymore. But, it's important to understand the area so I can schedule appointments properly (geographically). So many distinct neighborhoods! Magnolia can feel downright suburban, almost like the Eastside. Oh...and the streets. Yikes. Emerald City? I realize the Medical Marijuana people would would want to call this "Pot" City and Courtney Love call it "Hole" city, but I think we should call it "Pothole City!" These are found not just in the SODO district. These are murder on heavily packed carpet cleaning vans. The lakes and hills create for a mishmash of tricky criss-crossing streets which are sometimes a challenge even for a veteran to navigate (but not me...I mean a different vetaran).
What do I like about Seattle (besides the entertainment, dining, and parks)? I guess it's the challenge. If I'm crossing over the 520 bridge heading past the University of Washington Campus, I know it's time to step up my game. I had an appointment east of Ravenna a few months ago where the driveway was too steep (and tight) to park in, so I parked on the street. But, I found the spot was set to time out at 4:00pm and become a tow zone giving me on 1 hour 20 minutes to get the work done. A parking enforcement official showed up 5 minutes early and then a tow truck pulled up right at 4:00 as I pulled out. Very close call, but just as importantly, the carpets looked terrific and the customer got their damage deposit back.
I also like the ready availability of food. Food is everywhere in Seattle...and I'm not just talking about Dick's Burgers. If I'm between appointments, I can choose between Thai food, Greek, Italian...or whatever.
What about the people? Are the people in Seattle better or friendlier? If so, better than where? Well, the truth is I just don't know. Except for a few short vacations out of state, I really haven't lived anywhere besides Seattle and the Eastside. There might be more anxiety in Seattle than the Eastside...or, maybe just a different type of anxiety.
Well, enough for now. I'm going to be in West Seattle tomorrow and Anderson Carpet Cleaning will see you then. |
