A large part of our business involves cleaning up after dogs. So, it was creating some conflict in my personal life as my family (wife and 3 daughters) had been lobbying for a puppy for some years. After having seen what can only be described as vast canine destruction over the years (and minor destruction on a daily basis), you can only imagine my feelings at the idea of bringing a dog into my own home. However, this was a battle I was beginning to lose. I could feel a tidal wave of family consensus about to engulf me and I was beginning to feel like a Darth Vader figure. So, it became apparent I was going to have to give in (the pet rabbit option had failed).

Julie and the kids had done quit a bit of research and found a puppy candidate that was supposedly hypo-allergenic, didn't shed, was naturally fairly clean, and energetic but mild mannered. I seriously doubted such an animal existed, but it turned out "Jasper" was in fact all these things. I have come to really enjoy our puppy dog (6 months now) and everyone comments on how cute he is.

I have to confess a new appreciation for the situations dog owners face, both from a social standpoint (i.e. the pressure to get one), and the logistics of keeping your home free from various dog-related abuses. I also think I may have been a bit insensitive to dog owning customers in some past situations. Really there is no magic bullet and not everything can be anticipated. But, if you are going to get a dog and want one that is easier on your rugs, I suggest considering a Shichon (designer-puppy cross between a Shitzu and a Bichon) for the reasons I have mentioned. We got ours from http://www.lillybits.com/ located in Bothell, WA, which I highly recommend. But if that doesn't fit you, be sure to get a Golden Retriever or a Black Lab and plan on calling us every 6 months.
